If you have seen a tire tube, you know that it is used to hold air to keep the tire in shape. This is pretty common before the invention of tubeless tires. tank bladders work the same way, but they store liquid, not air.
Today, most tanks have bladders—they are safe, convenient, and they prevent the liquid from contamination. They are often called tank liners.
What we want to do with you today is to explore tank bladders. By the end of this tutorial, you should have new knowledge of why tank bladders are important, and what kind of materials are often used to make them.
What are tank bladders made of?
Tank bladders are made from different materials. The materials commonly used are PVC, nitrite rubber, and LLDPE. The kind of material used in the construction of the bladder depends on the liquid that the company stores.
The bladders are welded in a steel tank. There are many types of combining the bladder with the tank. Sometimes, heat is used. Some companies use high-frequency vulcanizing.
How do tank bladders work?
A bladder works like a balloon. It expands as water fills it. The marvellous thing about the bladder is that they also regulate when water is filled. If the pressure from the outside is greater than the pressure inside the bladder, it fills out with water or liquid.
On the other hand, it stops the filling if the pressure from the bladder is greater than the pressure coming from the liquid source. Bladders have check valves. These are the things that prevent the liquid from flowing back into the source. Instead, they keep the liquid inside the bladder as a reserve.
Because of this, many bladders do not need pumps. The physics of the pressure is what serves as the pump. It has the capacity to stop and start the filling process.
What are the different types of bladders?
The types of bladders depend on how you want to use them. As always, most tank bladders are used in industrial systems. However, this does not mean that you cannot use them for commercial or residential purposes.
Portable Water Bladders
This is a type of water bladder that is ready for use. It is collapsible, and it is portable. The bladder is designed for easy deployment and can be used for water storage.
Portable water bladders are used mainly in camping, evacuation, and military events. They come in many sizes. There are small versions that can only fill up to a few litres, and there are big ones that have a capacity of up to 210,000 gallons.
Sometimes, these are called potable water bladders. What this means is that the water inside is clean and can be used for drinking. Potable water bladders are also mostly seen in agricultural areas. People who harvest rainwater have these. You can also use it if you need emergency water storage, or if you want to live far from the city.
Chemical Bladders
These are bladders used mainly for chemicals. Like the first one, these are collapsible. You can use them for storage tanks, and they are easily deployed.
Bladders like these are commonly used in industrial settings. If you need to carry liquid in a plane, by and, or by sea, you need non-potable or chemical bladder for your liquid.
Truck Bed Water Bladder
This kind of tank bladder is made specifically to withstand the rigours of travelling on a truck bed. Yes, you literally put them on your truck bed and fill them with liquid. They are strong and long-lasting. They will not burst.
This kind of bladder is ideal for campers. They are made with heavy-duty fabrics, and they are reliable for haling water, juice, and other types of liquids. This bladder is also ideal for use in agricultural and construction sites.
