A sewage tank is a requirement for any institution that manages waste. Specifically, it is used in facilities that have a chemical or water waste.

But how does a sewage tank work? What materials are ideal to use, and how should you choose the company that would fabricate and install it?

What is a sewage tank made of?

A sewage tank, which is also called a septic tank, can be fabricated with different kinds of materials. In many countries, they use concrete as it is an underground chamber. They line up the concrete with waterproof materials to prevent the bacteria from seeping into the soil.

In Australia, our sewage tanks are usually made of concrete for residential purposes. However, there are other materials required by the government, depending on the kind of waste you will dispose of.

Here are the most common ones:

  • Fibreglass
  • Plastic
  • Steel

Today, there are better technologies such as glass fused tanks, which many commercial industries also use for sewage systems. Glass fused steel or GFS is great for fighting corrosion, including the destructive anaerobic activities of the bacteria found in the waste.

How does a sewage tank work?

Sewage systems are placed underground. They are not accessible to humans, and they suffer less from the harmful atmospheric elements. However, they are also subjected to the conditions underground—there is an ecosystem of bacteria underground, plus water that can cause a crack.

But how do they work?

Sewage systems are mostly used for waste water treatment. Not all of them work like concrete septic tanks for houses. Sewage systems are used in rural areas. What happens is that the water from facilities—like the water from your bath or sink—is treated. The same principle applies to companies that use water.

The septic system has several chambers and drain fields. What happens inside is that the sewage system takes organic matter like soil, solid foods, and grease. These things trickle through the soil and are left behind. The water flows through the pipes, and the water is treated with disinfectants before being released back into the soil.

As the water gets absorbed by the soil, it evaporates or feeds plants and trees. The water is then recycled as part of the natural process.

In a nutshell, here is how it works:

  • Water runs from the manufacturing facility
  • The septic tank absorbs the water
  • The waste water is held in the sewage tank
  • The solids settle down at the bottom
  • Grease floats on top
  • The scum and sludge cannot leave the tank because of different compartments; only the water flows
  • The waste water goes to a drain field; The waste water is treated
  • The water goes back to the soil
  • Nature treats the water

As you can see, it is not that complicated. However, the tank you use must not have a leak. Otherwise, the grease and scum along with the bacteria will trickle down the soil. If this happens, it can cause an environmental problem. The worse thing that can happen is that it can contaminate our water.

How to choose a sewage tank company

For sewage systems, you have to work with only the best. It is unlike a normal water tank because if the sewage tank was not done right, it can cause environmental hazards and health problems.

And this is why you should carefully choose the company that is going to fabricate and install your sewage tank.

Here are some tips:

1. Years of experience

You have to choose a company that has years of experience. Even if the fabrication and installation of tanks are theoretically easy, a lot of wrong things can happen.

Again, we cannot stress the importance of proper installation. A leak from a sewage tank can cause damage—the worst thing that can happen is an outbreak of cholera, diarrhoea, and other diseases.

2. Options offered

What kind of materials are offered by the company? Do they only do concrete sewage tanks? You have to work with a company here you have a lot of options, especially so if you really want to comply with government expectations.

At ATM Tanks, we have many options. Apart from stainless steel tanks, we also offer glass fused tanks, glass lined tanks, and so much more. On top of these tank options, we can coat the tank with epoxy or polyurethane.

The options for materials do not end there. We also provide different kinds of linings inside. This is crucial because the right lining ensures water-proof construction. We have polyurethane, rubber linings, PE linings, and many more.

3. Services available

Once a tank is installed, it has to be serviced. Tanks are subject to corrosion, and there will come a time when you have to repair it. If you don’t it is not going to work as intended and it can make your business or facility suffer.

You need to choose a company that offers full coverage for your sewage tank or other tanks storage facilities.

Here are some of the services we offer:

  • Maintenance – we repair linings for the tanks and we also clean the tank
  • Fabrication – if you are looking forward to a brand-new tank, we can fabricate it for you. As mentioned earlier, you can choose from various materials. Our engineers will help you do this.
  • Refurbishments – for sewage tanks, you may not need this. But for other types of tanks, we can provide ladders, gratings, walkways, handrails, and many more. We can also do asbestos removal.

We at ATM Tank Group have a 360-degree service structure. We have everything that you need. For every new technology that comes out in the market, you can guarantee that we have it.

In fact, we even use what is called ROV or remotely controlled vehicles in our repair and maintenance services. There are robots that we send inside giant tanks. These robots can take samples and assess the condition of the water or the chemical tanks.

Our robots are also equipped with cameras so we can see the condition of the tank lining from the inside, without having to send a human diver.

Choose the right company to service your sewage tank needs. We at ATM Tank Group have been around for a long time. We are at the forefront of the tank industry, and we have a team of engineers and experts that you can rely on.

We also do an on-site inspection and ocular visits. This way, we can get a good picture of how the tank will be installed and used. By the time we are done with our visit, we will start working on a plan, which is also based on your specifications.
